John, this is Paul Eaton, Major General, U.S. Army, retired.
My friend, Alex Vindman, is running for a seat in the United States Senate in my home state of Florida.
While I was in the Army, I commanded the U.S. Army Infantry Center at Fort Benning. Alex is a graduate of our most elite Infantry schools, including Ranger School, Airborne and our finest leadership schools; and he was commissioned as an Infantry officer. He led American troops in combat, was wounded in action, and received the Purple Heart.
This alone is a record of service and sacrifice worthy of recognition, but it’s likely you know of Alex for a different reason. In 2019, while serving on the National Security Council, Alex blew the whistle on a phone call in which Donald Trump asked President Zelenskyy of Ukraine to investigate the Biden family in exchange for military aid.
Trump went on to be impeached for that phone call, and that happened because Alex had the courage to do the right thing.
For his courage, Alex has had to endure relentless attacks from Trump, his allies, and their extremist supporters. But it has not broken him, nor has it lessened his love for and devotion to this country.
I can personally attest to that. I have been incredibly fortunate to work with Alex for the last several years. I have personally witnessed his integrity, his intelligence, and his patriotism. At this perilous time in our nation’s history, I’m incredibly proud that Alex has chosen to serve — again.
I can tell you this with absolute certainty: If more people like Alex ran for office, we’d be well on our way to saving this country from the likes of Trump. We need more people like him in the Senate.
