“Many veterans decide to register as unaffiliated, or independent. Imagine you’re a veteran. You’ve served your country down range. You get honorably discharged. And then, you want to participate in our democracy. We here in Pennsylvania say, ‘Nope. We value your service, but not enough that you can actually vote in our primary system.” - PA Rep. Jared Solomon (202 District, Philadelphia County) [Watch ([link removed]) ]
“Parties here in Pennsylvania, in a closed primary system, have the power to draw the lines in districts throughout the Commonwealth and control who votes. This is another reform we need, which is a citizen-led commission to re-draw our lines.” - PA Rep. Jared Solomon (202 District, Philadelphia County) [Watch ([link removed]) ]

Should independents vote in PA primaries?
It was 2024 that we last sat down with PA Representative Jared Solomon of the 202nd district, but the topic of open primaries remains an issue in the Commonwealth. From an opportunity to participate in our nation's democracy, to having fair and rational district maps, it seems some hot-button issues don't change with time.
Hear what thoughts this Philadelphia-based representative had at the time, and decide for yourself what may still be open for debate in 2026. Should all voters be permitted to participate in primary elections? Are the Commonwealth's maps unfair?
