This past filing season, we noticed several errors on returns that could delay processing. To avoid errors, here are some tips to help your client get their return processed timely:
- Take extra time to verify amounts, even if it takes a while, before filing the return. The most common error we see is incorrect estimated payment amounts.
- Include Schedule M1W and make sure all withholding amounts are included on line 20 of Form M1.
- When filing a return with the Renter’s Credit, ensure Schedule M1RENT, M1REF, and all CRPs are included. Do not mail Schedule M1RENT separately from the tax return.
- Verify the address is 100% accurate. Check for misspelled streets, transposed numbers, and the address is their mailing address, which is not always their physical address.
- Verify Social Security Numbers and names are 100% accurate. Check for transposed numbers and switched numbers for spouses. Verify names match Social Security records, especially if the name has changed.
We also saw many errors with the advanced Child Tax Credit (ACTC) payment computations on Schedule M1CWFC. Verify your software is doing this correctly on the first few ACTC returns you do.
