Dear Friend,

Just over a year ago Friends of the Everglades and Bullsugar Alliance merged, uniting our efforts to build political will backed by science and policy, to save the greater Everglades ecosystem including the northern estuaries. This new alliance was formed 50 years after renowned journalist, author, and environmental activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas founded Friends of the Everglades to stop a major jetport from being built north of Everglades National Park. With the help of concerned citizens like you, we have come a long way since our humble beginnings to become a powerful voice in the fight for the Everglades.

With the army of Friends who power our organization, our impact has been significant. We have fought for enforceable pollution limits in the Everglades and driven federal policy changes for clean water. We also have educated the public about the acute health threats of toxic algae blooms and ensured such health risks are factored into Florida’s water-management decisions. We funded scientific research into the harmful effects of methylmercury on the ecosystem and opposed damaging road and development projects, including the recent State Road 836 extension in Miami-Dade. We aim to address what’s most important to you in the fight for the Everglades!

Our current priorities include working to stop toxic discharges from Lake Okeechobee to the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie estuaries, protecting the public from harmful algal blooms, and sending clean water south to Florida Bay and Everglades National Park. Our approach is three-fold: funding scientific research, using the data to drive policy change through advocacy and litigation, and elevating the public’s voice through educational outreach and grassroots organizing.

Friends of the Everglades dives into water policy and Bullsugar.org generates the political will. We invite you to join us in advancing Marjory’s legacy to help drive these efforts and ultimately support our mission to preserve, protect, and restore the only Everglades in the world.
