CHIP IN $10I’ve been saying for months now that Trump’s constant attacks and racist rhetoric has consequences. Last night we saw what that looks like. A man attacked me at a town hall with my constituents.
Look, we have heard it all from Trump and his administration. He called me “disgusting” and “SCUM”. He called me and all Somali-Americans “garbage”. He said that I should be sent back to Somalia. His allies in Congress have threatened to denaturalize and deport me. He and JD Vance have spread horrible, false conspiracies about my family and I to gin up outrage.
All of this has led to an explosion of racist harassment and threats on my life from the far-right. But that’s not all. Trump’s anti-immigrant fixations guide federal policy under his presidency, and it’s a disaster for America.
As soon as Trump focused-in on Somali-American people, ICE initiated Operation Metro Surge, and flooded Minnesota with ICE and other immigration agents in an attempt to intimidate and punish the Somali-American community.
When ICE arrived and realized that 99% of Somali-Americans are citizens, they turned to racially-profiling Latino people, Asian people, Black people, and anyone who looked or sounded “not born here” to try to round up undocumented folks.
In the process, they have destroyed any semblance of civil rights. Unlawful searches and seizures have become a daily occurrence. Stopping people in the street, ramming them in traffic, and busting down their doors to detain them without even checking their documentation. US citizens and legal immigrants alike have been arrested and detained for days or weeks, often to simply be released again.
And on top of the unlawful behavior, ICE has demonstrated an outright violent hostility to the people of my district and my state. They’ve beat countless protesters and observers. They’ve tear-gassed school kids and babies. They have abused and humiliated our elders. They’ve murdered two people in cold blood.
These are the devastating consequences of Trump and the far-right’s obsession with Somali-Americans like me. Yes, I have now faced down an attacker, and face down harassment daily. But it’s my community, our safety, our democracy, and the Constitution that has suffered the most.
Friend, we have a moral and historic obligation to reject Trump’s racism and hatred, reject ICE’s occupation of our state, and save our democracy from these authoritarian thugs.
For me, that means fighting every step of the way until DHS and ICE get out of Minnesota, Kristi Noem is impeached, the murderers are charged, and ICE is defunded and abolished.
