BREAKING: Earlier today, the Maine Climate Superfund Act was voted out of the Environment & Natural Resources committee by a vote of 8-4! Thank you to all who attended Tuesday’s rally: your voice was heard. The bill will next head to the full Senate for a vote. Now is the time to keep pushing; continue below for more information.

Dear John,

Fun fact about me: Despite my decidedly middle age status, until yesterday, I had never been to a rally . When you work in news, even in the weather department, you’re not allowed to take a public position on a bill, candidate, political issue etc. So the “Make Polluters Pay Action Day” at the State House on Tuesday was the first time I’ve ever been to an event like it.

What struck me from this “outsider” perspective is the passion of those who attended and the lengths they went to in order to be there. It had snowed the previous 36 hours or more, the roads were still in tough shape, and it was in the single digits -- but that didn’t stop more than 50 people from across the state from showing up in support of the Climate Superfund bill. Cleaning snow off the car at 6 am was worth it to them and to me.

When I first heard about the Climate Superfund Act, it was something I was excited about. It’s such a simple premise, as you’ll hear us say: “You make a mess, you clean it up.” I teach my 7-year-old son this lesson, why should multi-billion dollar companies be held to lower standards?

Opponents will try to make it more complicated than that, but truly; it isn’t.

These large fossil fuel companies have known for decades what the emissions from their product are doing to the planet. But instead of being transparent they have denied the reality, and in many cases funded huge misinformation campaigns.

We have a long history of holding companies accountable in just this way. We did it with polluters in the 70's, we did it with tobacco companies, and we did it with pharmaceuticals most recently. It’s time to make polluters pay in 2026.

I hope you’ll join me in raising your voice in support of the Maine Climate Superfund Act.
