Friend,
With summer winding down, there's one thing on everyone's minds: what are we going to do about reopening our schools?
There are a few options. And we know where the President stands. Come September, he's commited to making sure schools reopen everywhere, but he isn't committed to making sure that it's safe.
We know that children perform better when they are taught in a classroom. School is also an important source of childcare for working families. But as a physician, take it from me: we must balance the benefits of reopening with the risks of further spreading the virus. If not, our health and the economy will only suffer.
Local communities should decide for themselves when to reopen. When they do, they should have strategies for keeping it safe for our students and teachers. Strategies like mask usage and temperature checks are a start.
These are the very same things being used to keep the President safe. If the White House wouldn't reopen without them, then neither should our schools.
This isn't about politics - it's about our children's safety. That's not something to gamble with.
We will get through this, but we have to do it the right way. Thanks for standing with us. Stay safe and as always, be well.
