Hi John, Here in Wisconsin, we’re taught early that being a good neighbor isn’t optional. It’s who we are. We look out for one another, especially in moments of fear, uncertainty, and harm. And right now, our neighbors in Minnesota need us.
Across Minnesota, and in communities nationwide, the Department of Homeland Security and ICE are bringing violence and chaos that is tearing families apart, traumatizing workers, and destabilizing entire communities. This escalation is unacceptable. It has already resulted in tragic loss of life and lasting harm and it runs counter to the values of safety, dignity, and care that strong, healthy communities are built upon.
At the same time, Minnesotans are showing the rest of the country what nonviolent leadership looks like. Tens of thousands of people are using their First Amendment rights peacefully. They’re showing up for one another, protecting neighbors, and refusing to be silent in the face of injustice. That kind of courage and care offers steadiness and hope in the midst of a continuing crisis.
A healthy democracy is essential to everything we fight for at Wisconsin Conservation Voters – from clean air and water to clean energy and climate action. That democracy depends on the rule of law, free speech, and free and fair elections. When government agencies use fear and force against communities, they weaken the democratic foundation we all rely on.
Attorney General Pam Bondi’s attempt to demand access to Minnesota’s voter rolls as a condition for easing this manufactured chaos is alarming and unacceptable. Let me be clear. Holding voting rights hostage is not a solution to violence. It is violence against our democracy. We will not allow any administration to intimidate voters or silence our voices in Wisconsin, Minnesota, or anywhere else.
Sometimes it’s difficult to know what to do or how to help. That can increase our stress and harm our mental health even further. Here are meaningful ways we can show up for our neighbors right now. One important place to start is Stand With Minnesota. This resource hub connects people directly to:
- Trusted, on-the-ground organizations providing legal support, mutual aid, and emergency assistance to families impacted by ICE activity
- Ways to take action, including calling elected officials, sharing verified information, and standing up for civil and voting rights
-
Community support resources for those affected by raids, detention, or intimidation
- Opportunities to give directly to efforts helping Minnesota communities recover and stay safe
We also urge you to call your U.S. Senators and tell them to reject Department of Homeland Security funding that enables violence and abuse. We know real safety comes from strong, connected communities, not fear. From caring for neighbors, not tearing families apart. And from protecting the right to vote, not threatening it.
