Our allies are pulling away and building new coalitions without us. Every effort to extract pain and payment from them is doing the opposite of what Trump intended — and exactly what most of us expected: isolating America.
What makes a mob boss powerful is the fact that those he dominates actually need him. They need his protection. They need his money. They need his power. But the more Trump behaves like a mob boss, the more our allies are coming to the conclusion that a world exists in which they simply don’t need us.
We might be a long way off from a time when we are completely isolated, but pure isolation isn’t a necessary condition for total ruin.
