Welcome to Texas!

What to Know: Podcaster Joe Rogan says he’s leaving California for Texas, searching for “a little bit more freedom.”

The TPPF Take: There’s freedom of thought and freedom to prosper here.

“I all comes down to what Joe Rogan said, ‘a little bit more freedom,’” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore a former California assemblyman. “He’s welcome; y’all come on down to Texas!”

School’s Out?

What to Know: Schools in Texas continue to push back their opening dates; in Tarrant County, for example, schools will be online-only at least through Sept. 28. And parents are starting to make their voices heard.

The TPPF Take: Parents must have a say in when—and how—students return to school, and if schools do not provide in-person education, parents should be given their money back to seek alternatives.

Parents need to be able to decide how to send their students to school in the fall,” says TPPF’s Erin Valdez. “The American Academy of Pediatrics says schools are fundamental to child development and provide a wide array of benefits. Many families have indicated they want virtual classes this fall, but for many others, that’s impossible. Parents need the ability to make choices that work for their families.”

Investing in Virtue Signaling

What to Know: More and more investment firms are focusing on “socially conscious” and “sustainable” portfolios, often to their shareholders’ detriment.

The TPPF Take: “Socially conscious” energy investment will hurt investors and even the poor.

“Efforts to divest from fossil fuels would yield no significant environmental benefits but come with an extreme economic cost,” says TPPF’s Jason Isaac. “Denying financing to American energy producers based on political pressure kills good-paying jobs, increases our cost of living, and reduces the capital available to invest in the energy technologies of the future — while giving a leg up to less responsible energy producers.”
