School’s Out?
What to Know: Schools in Texas continue to push back their opening dates; in Tarrant County, for example, schools will be online-only at least through Sept. 28. And parents are starting to make their voices heard.
The TPPF Take: Parents must have a say in when—and how—students return to school, and if schools do not provide in-person education, parents should be given their money back to seek alternatives.
“Parents need to be able to decide how to send their students to school in the fall,” says TPPF’s Erin Valdez. “The American Academy of Pediatrics says schools are fundamental to child development and provide a wide array of benefits. Many families have indicated they want virtual classes this fall, but for many others, that’s impossible. Parents need the ability to make choices that work for their families.”
