john,

Late last week, the House voted on a funding bill that will send resources to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including ICE. I voted no on that bill. The events from this weekend in Minnesota only make me more confident that I made the right decision.

By now, many of you have seen the videos of the recent ICE shooting in Minneapolis. It is heartbreaking, disturbing, and downright cruel. It is also a pattern we are seeing unfold in real time.

ICE promised to rid our country of the worst of the worst—but instead—American citizens are being targeted, families are being torn apart without cause, and legal immigrants are having their status revoked or ignored. Our communities are flooded with fear, and our own citizens are now questioning if practicing their First Amendment rights will also lead to their untimely death. Yet the Trump administration is standing firmly behind their efforts—going so far as to try and stop local law enforcement from being able to conduct a thorough investigation of this weekend's death. How can that be?

As Secretary of DHS, Kristi Noem is responsible for this pattern of brutality, and she should be fired immediately or resign in disgrace. As president, Donald Trump must own his involvement in the militarization of ICE. It is not enough to ask for accountability; we need direct action to stop this devastating path our country is headed down.

I voted against funding DHS without additional oversight. I voted against a bill that failed to include clear guardrails, failed to strengthen transparency, and failed to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. I voted to stand firmly against the atrocities that we are seeing today that have no place in the United States of America.

Public safety should never come at the expense of people's rights, dignity, or lives. Every vote I take is to ensure our government is working for the betterment of the American people.

Thank you for standing with me,

Kim
