Dear Neighbor,
As we begin a new year, my commitment to keeping our communities safe remains as strong as ever. This month, my office advanced three key actions to strengthen public safety and ensure residents get the support they need:

-
I co-sponsored legislation to secure over $1 million in state funding for the Drug Market Agency Coordination Center, boosting coordinated efforts to disrupt illegal drug sales and improve neighborhood safety.
-
Following a devastating fire that displaced over a hundred residents, I called on City departments to review and strengthen temporary assistance programs so we can better support residents and families impacted by fires and other emergencies by increasing eligibility thresholds so more of our neighbors can be supported during hard times.
-
Yesterday, the Board passed my resolution

supporting AB1537 , reaffirming our commitment to ensuring peace officers remain focused on protecting and serving our local communities – not working on immigration enforcement. With this legislation’s passage, San Francisco is the first local city to support AB 1537, continuing our city’s leadership in protecting immigrants – because we know that when immigrant communities feel safe, everyone is safer.

I understand how challenging these recent days have been for many of us. My office remains committed to serving our diverse communities, fighting for our constitutional rights, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our neighbors no matter what.

In service,

Bilal Mahmood

Shared Housing Reform Act Passes! This month, the Board passed my Shared Housing Reform Act, which does away with antiquated laws that discriminate against chosen families and instead makes it easier for San Franciscans to choose affordable lifestyles that fit their personal needs—helping make San Francisco a more affordable, welcoming, and inclusive city.

Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year
It was an honor to celebrate Evie and Nayely, this year’s Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year! This was one of the first events I attended as a supervisor nearly a year ago, and I continue to be deeply inspired by the leadership and commitment of these incredible young people in our community.

District 5 Beautification Day
District 5 truly felt the love at this year’s Love Our Neighborhood Beautification Day, where volunteers from across District 5 came together to clean, green, and beautify our neighborhoods.

Thank you to SF Public Works for organizing this event, and to the many neighborhood groups across the district who spent the morning building community together. It takes all of us to make a difference and our neighborhoods are far better for it.

Small Actions, Big Wins
A Little Patch Goes a Long Way
Sometimes the smallest fixes make the biggest difference. After hearing from a local business owner about a tree-related sidewalk uplift at Fillmore and Turk that had folks tripping way too often, our office worked with city partners to get a temporary patch in place fast. The area has now been made safe while a permanent repair stays in the queue.

Not the final chapter yet, but a solid step forward. Fewer trips, safer sidewalks, and one less thing for neighbors to worry about while they’re just trying to get down the block.

Commendation

Celebrating Olivia Scanlon
We celebrated Olivia Scanlon, Chief of Staff at the Department of Emergency Management for her leadership during the citywide power outage, coordinating real-time response, communications, and public safety operations to keep residents informed and safe.

Beginning her journey at City Hall as a legislative aide, her two decades of public service have been instrumental in keeping our city safe, strong, and resilient. Responding to emergencies is a 24/7, year-round job, and her dedication and sacrifice for the city are deeply valued. Please join me in thanking Olivia for her unwavering commitment to San Francisco.
