Dear John,
We are excited to invite you to an important discussion, Holding Court: The Endangered Lawyer, taking place on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 2 PM ET. Join us for a conversation with Brett Dixon, Vice President of the Law Society; Todd A. Cox, Associate Director-Counsel of the Legal Defense Fund (LDF); and Seth Frotman, Senior Fellow at the Berkeley Center for Consumer Law and Economic Justice and Towards Justice. AFJ President Rachel Rossi will be moderating the discussion.
Since 2010, the International Day of the Endangered Lawyer has turned the world’s attention to nations where the rule of law is in peril, and judges and lawyers are under attack. For 2026, the global coalition has designated the United States as the focus country. Our panelists will explore the systemic challenges that led to this designation — from executive orders targeting law firms and the revocation of security clearances to the rising tide of harassment against attorneys and judges to the attacks on nonprofit organizations that provide legal services and advocacy.
When lawyers are targeted for representing marginalized clients or the pro bono cases they take, the entire justice system begins to crumble. The discussion will also examine why international bar associations believe the U.S. now mirrors patterns of authoritarianism previously seen in other focus countries and what steps the legal community can take to safeguard judicial independence and the right to counsel.

See you there,
