I won’t be bought and paid for

Hi John,

I was grateful to sit down with The Guardian and discuss the realities of running a grassroots campaign free of corporate PAC money and special interest strings. It’s not glamorous work. It’s hard work, and it’s the kind of work that leads to real change. I’m in it for the long haul – every mile, every coffee shop meeting, and every small-dollar investment - with you.

Here’s some of what I shared with The Guardian this week:

The economic and political systems that we are a part of are serving corporate greed and billionaires at the expense of regular people. This is not the democracy we want to live in.

I’ve been fighting for our communities in the north state, especially when things are hard, especially when things are challenging. That’s what I want to keep doing.

I want you to know that no matter how hard this election gets, I’ll always be fighting for our community, not corporate donors, not billionaires, and not my own political aspirations. There are too many corporate pay-to-play politicians in Washington, and it’s their connections to corporate donors that stall progress on virtually every issue we care about – healthcare access, climate change, prescription costs, utilities, wildfire insurance, and more.

Because I refuse all corporate PAC money, I spend my days talking to community members and asking for $10 or $25 at a time while my opponents get $10,000 checks from big money interests. The Guardian calls this an "uphill battle." I call it the only way to build a democracy that actually belongs to us.

’ll share a final quote that sums up my thoughts on the current administration:

[Donald Trump is an] adjudicated sex offender and a war criminal who treats the Constitution like it’s an annoyance instead of the law of the land.

Democrats have been crying out for leaders who DO SOMETHING. For people who aren’t afraid to stand up for our constitution, for the rule of law, and for addressing the material issues facing all of us – from the rising costs of childcare, rent, and healthcare, to access to education and good-paying, union jobs.

I will be that fighter, John.

But I need fighters alongside me to help support this campaign. I’m running to win in the special and again in the general election, and that kind of effort takes an enormous amount of time, energy, and resources. So please, chip in even just $1 to flip CA-01 blue and send a progressive champion to Washington this year.

In solidarity,

Audrey Denney
