Dear John, [[link removed]] [[link removed]] [[link removed]] [[link removed]] [[link removed]]
Over the weekend, we were all horrified to learn that Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old American citizen and ICU nurse who spent his life caring for veterans and his community, was shot and killed by federal agents in Minneapolis. This tragedy hits especially hard coming just weeks after the death of Renee Good , compounding the trauma being felt by communities across Minneapolis and beyond.
Alex’s parents have spoken with heartbreaking clarity about who their son was: a caregiver, a protector, someone who showed up for others. Their grief and anger are justified, and so is the outrage many of us are feeling right now.
As Congress considers new funding for ICE, what happens next is not so abstract. Decisions made in the coming days will have real consequences, and what we do right now matters.
At The Union, we believe moments like this require more than statements of concern. They require people to act. Alex’s killing is a wake-up call, and it’s on us to make sure something changes, because this wasn’t the first time, and unfortunately it might not be the last. We cannot wait for someone else to step in or assume accountability will come on its own. It won’t — unless we demand it.
We are calling on everyone to take immediate action.
- Call your U.S. Representatives [[link removed]] and Senators [[link removed]] and tell them to oppose legislation that funds ICE or federal enforcement operations without real oversight.
- Demand independent investigations into the use of lethal force by federal agents.
- Speak out, organize, and make sure elected officials understand that this moment will not pass quietly.
Every voice matters, and the more voices we get, the louder our movement becomes. This is how we create change and move forward.
And if you want to get even more involved, be sure to check out some of the organizations doing the work on the ground in Minnesota right now:

Thank you for taking the time to honor Alex Pretti’s life. Now, let’s make sure this moment leads to action, not more of the same.
