Friend –
Republicans keep insisting they are troubled by what they are seeing.
In private conversations and selective public comments, they acknowledge
that the violence tied to ICE and DHS operations has gone too far, that
public trust has eroded, and that the administration’s response has only
made matters worse. They know this has become politically and morally
indefensible. They are not confused about the stakes.
But none of that concern has shown up where it actually counts.
The DHS funding bill now before the Senate still includes no enforceable
accountability measures. No conditions. No requirements that would
meaningfully constrain how these agencies operate. No consequences that
would make future violence less likely. After days of public pressure, the
bill remains exactly as it was. Let’s be clear: inaction is not
defensible, it’s an endorsement of DHS’ actions.
[ [link removed] ]If you believe the Senate should not pass DHS funding without
enforceable accountability, sign the petition to the Senate and make that
opposition unmistakable. >>
After Alex Pretti was killed by federal agents, the White House scrambled
to change its tone once its nefarious attempt at justification collapsed.
We know what the legal and moral choice is here. We must keep up our
pressure to prevent funding of these agencies without conditions and
accountability.
A Senate vote could happen as soon as Thursday, which is why keeping the
pressure on right now matters. Accountability is on the table because the
American people are rising up in opposition. Keep up the pressure. It is
making a difference.
[ [link removed] ]Add your name to the petition to the Senate now and help keep that
pressure exactly where it belongs. >>
Republicans cannot keep saying the violence troubles them while advancing
legislation that guarantees nothing changes. Words must be matched by
action, and the refusal to act is itself an answer.
In solidarity,
People For the American Way
