Every day, Sierra Club advocates for all Americans to have access to our public lands; to clean air and water; to affordable and reliable energy and to safe and healthy communities. This advocacy depends on free speech, peaceful assembly, and a functioning democracy.
The killing of Alex Jeffrey Pretti in broad daylight marks a dangerous descent for our country. Alex was an ICU nurse who helped veterans. He was an avid outdoorsman. He was exercising his first amendment rights. He should be alive today.
The Sierra Club is outraged by these inhumane and unprecedented actions from the Trump administration. The facts are this is the third shooting and second killing in Minneapolis this month by federal agents. We know these are not the only times they have shot and killed people. Our ability to protect both the human and natural environment is directly impacted. This is a turning point where we must speak out.
We will not be silent about this and will not look away from this senseless loss of life. We stand strong with Minnesotans and our North Star chapter. Truth, accountability, and community must be defended to prevail and to preserve our civil society.
We are rising in solidarity to reaffirm our belief in everyone's right to thrive, for democracy and justice, and our organization's love and dependence on our freedoms. We mourn Alex Pretti and extend our hearts to his family, and encourage you to do the same and advocate for a better country for us all.

One Year After Trump's Inauguration
One year into Trump's second presidential term, the administration's harmful governing approach and the scale of the damage have become clear. From ordering the cancellation of approved offshore wind projects -- including some already under construction -- to opening up millions of acres of public lands to extractive industries, to dismantling federal climate science, this is proving to be one of the most destructive administrations in US history.
Here is a look back at some of the major actions the administration has taken on climate and the environment over its first year, and an assessment of where things stand now.

Live Event: The Hidden Health Cost of Fossil Fuel Pollution
We all know fossil fuel pollution is poisoning our climate. Now a new report from Physicians for Social Responsibility finds that these pollutants are contaminating the air we breathe, the water we drink -- with the oil and gas industry causing an estimated 350,000 premature deaths a year in the United States alone. That's why we're hosting a critical discussion on health and environmental injustice. Join us on February 18 to hear directly from a doctor and frontline advocates about what we're up against and how we can help our families.
We are building a more healthy, clean, affordable future. Join us!

President Trump recently announced that the United States would withdraw from 66 international organizations, conventions and treaties. One particularly striking item was the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the most important climate treaty in the world.
What does this mean, and where do we go from here?

Bringing Caribou Home
When the last known southern mountain caribou in the US was tranquilized, netted, and airlifted to British Columbia in 2019, it made national headlines. For most, that's where the story ended. But in the northernmost reaches of Washington and Idaho, where the final American herd lived, a new story began. A small group of scientists, activists, and tribal leaders kept the faith.
Read how this dedicated group worked to restore and protect caribou habitat.
