It has just been announced that scientists have now set the Doomsday Clock at 85 Seconds to Midnight. This means that we are the closest we have ever been to global catastrophe and the extinction of humanity. In making this announcement, scientists have warned that people and planet are have been put at greater risk because of a "full-blown arms race, as evidenced by increasing numbers of nuclear warheads." This is why arms control treaties - like the New START between the two biggest nuclear powers of Russia and the US - are so critical.
