Neighbors,
Many of you have seen or heard reports of a mountain lion near Lafayette Park last night and today. I want to share what we know and how the City is responding.
Currently, the mountain lion is hiding in between two buildings on California St between Octavia and Laguna. The San Francisco Police Department, Animal Care and Control, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife have cordoned off the area and are preparing to tranquilize the animal momentarily. This will allow authorities to safely transport the mountain lion back to the wilderness.
There have been no reported direct contacts with humans, but I urge everyone to remain vigilant.
Out of an abundance of caution, please continue to stay aware. This is a young mountain lion and there is always the possibility that a mother could be present in the area.
Residents are advised to:
-
Avoid walking alone, especially at dawn or dusk
-
Keep children and pets close
-
Avoid parks until authorities give the all-clear
-
Report sightings to Animal Care and Control Dispatch: (415) 554-9400
City agencies are coordinating closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available. I’ll continue to share verified updates as soon as I receive them.
Thank you for staying calm, looking out for one another, and following guidance from public safety officials.
