We’re not going to let them steal power.

John,

If you’re finding it hard to keep up with the rapid pace of the redistricting crisis that has unfolded over the last year, you’re not alone. Donald Trump and his state-level allies have been doing everything in their power to manipulate maps and unfairly tilt the scales in their favor for the 2026 midterms.

So let’s go state by state to talk about where the fight for fair maps stands across the country. And yes, we need to ask you to make a donation to help power NDR PAC’s work to defend democracy everywhere it’s under attack.

Florida
The Sunshine State’s congressional map is already one of the most gerrymandered in the nation. But Gov. Ron DeSantis wants an even bigger power grab. He recently called for a special legislative session in April to further manipulate the state’s map, in an effort to deliver up to 4 more seats to Republicans and undermine the representation of communities of color.

Kansas
After proposing a new map that would eliminate the district of Rep. Sharice Davids, the state’s only Democrat in Congress, Republican state legislators are in full retreat. They admit they don’t have the votes to pass a new map, but there’s every reason to believe the White House isn’t giving up.

South Carolina
We’ve seen mounting support for a mid-decade redraw from Rep. Ralph Norman, a Republican candidate for South Carolina governor, as well as from members of the Freedom Caucus. Now pushback from voters has forced the state senate leader to acknowledge that redistricting is now “unlikely” to happen in the current session. That said, this one isn’t over as Republicans are eager to target the district of Rep. James Clyburn, the only Democrat in the state delegation.

Missouri
After the Republican-controlled legislature passed an egregiously gerrymandered map that could hand their party an additional congressional seat, more than 300,000 outraged Missourians signed petitions to put the map up for a vote. Republican state officials are trying every scheme imaginable to stop this citizen-led effort: They tossed out one-third of petition signatures and even admitted to writing the ballot initiative with misleading language. Trump allies are throwing millions into a campaign to thwart the will of the people, but the fair maps movement is fighting back to ensure Missouri voters get the final say.

Maryland
Just last week, Governor Wes Moore’s Redistricting Advisory Commission voted to recommend redrawing Maryland’s congressional map to counter Republican power grabs in states like Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina. In stark contrast to those mid-decade redraws, the commission’s process was thoroughly transparent, and prioritized input from voters.

Virginia
This month, state legislators passed a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow lawmakers to temporarily redraw the state’s congressional map, in an effort to even the playing field that is currently skewed due to Republican map manipulations in other states. Now, a measure to allow lawmakers to draw a new congressional map, will go to the voters — likely in April. Once again, where Democrats are countering the Republican power grabs, they’re doing it temporarily and with the express approval of the people.

Sadly, that’s not all. Several other states are watching to see if the Supreme Court guts key parts of the Voting Rights Act to give them cover to redraw their own maps to favor Republicans and weaken minority voting power before the midterms. The fair maps movement will need to be ready for every outcome.

In this moment of crisis, fighting for fair maps  is an around-the-clock job — and we can’t do it alone.  Whatever you’re able to give will make a HUGE difference in these states, and beyond.
