Across the country, nurses and other health care workers are standing up to say enough is enough.
We look out for ALL our patients, full stop. That’s why the invasion of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detaining, intimidating, and terrorizing our neighborhoods goes against everything we stand for as nurses and patient advocates.
Now they have once again committed a murder in cold blood — this time of one of our own, Alex Pretti, RN. He was a VA nurse, an ICU nurse right here in the Minneapolis metro area just like me. And that day, he was just doing what every nurse does: Caring for people, advocating for his patients. ICE murdered him for it.
Calling will only take a moment and each added voice will help create the public pressure we need to abolish ICE now! You can use the short script at the end of this email to help you make your voice heard.
I’m an ICU nurse here in Minnesota, but I’m also a president of National Nurses United. I know firsthand that when nurses organize to protect our patients and our communities, we win. And I know that we never back down when our patients and so many of our colleagues — regardless of immigration status or background — are under attack.
ICE’s campaign is not just immoral and unconstitutional, it is a full blown public health crisis. Masked ICE agents crowd our waiting rooms and sometimes even invade our units, standing directly in the way of nurses’ ability to provide care to all our patients. We make it our mission to care for and save human lives, and we must loudly oppose ICE, who pose a direct threat to us all. Especially in the wake of Alex Pretti’s unconscionable murder, one of so many shootings by ICE just this year. That’s why it’s so important we use our voices now.
Here is a short script below you can follow:
Hi, my name is _______. I am a constituent and I’m a registered nurse/other health care worker/patient. It is unconscionable, after a year of constant violence and militarization of our neighborhoods by the Trump administration, that Congress would consider sending $10 billion in funding to continue this harm. I’m calling today to urge my senator to oppose any appropriations package that includes the Homeland Security Appropriations bill, take away the $75 billion allocated to ICE in last year’s Republican budget reconciliation bill, and take immediate action to abolish ICE. Thank you.
In times of crisis, nurses don’t look away from our patients in need — we respond. ICE terror in our hospitals and our communities is the type of emergency we are uniquely positioned to respond to. With the support of our patients and our communities, we can make each other safe again.
Thank you for standing with us against this violence,
Mary Turner, RN
President
National Nurses United
P.S. We’re mobilizing to hold an entire week of ongoing candlelight vigils to honor and seek justice for Alex Pretti and to demand that the U.S. Senate and House vote no on any spending package that includes funding for ICE and other immigration enforcement agencies — or face electoral consequences. Find a vigil near you.
