State leaders have a responsibility to ensure that their statewide longitudinal data systems (SLDSs) are used to help students, communities, and policymakers better understand education and workforce pathways and outcomes.

When researchers have secure, responsible access to individual-level, de-identified data, they can generate the insights states need to evaluate programs, identify what’s working, and strengthen opportunities for learners. But making that access effective, secure, and sustainable is not a simple task.

Our latest brief, developed in partnership with the Data Integration Support Center (DISC) at WestED, provides state data leaders with practical pathways for navigating these challenges.

This new state implementation guide ([link removed]) :
* Explains why individual-level, de-identified data is essential for understanding education-to-workforce outcomes;
* Identifies five best practices for enhancing researcher access while maintaining strong privacy and security protections; and
* Highlights real-world examples from states that are already building researcher-friendly data systems.

As states continue to build and modernize their SLDSs, responsible researcher access is essential to maximizing the value of these systems for students,communities and decisionmakers.
