Dear John,
Last week’s severe weather has had a devastating impact on communities across the North Island. Over the last week I’ve visited many of the affected areas and met many incredible and resilient Kiwis. My thoughts remain with them and the families who have tragically lost loved ones.
The government is acting quickly to support those in need. Around 500 people have been displaced, and we have activated the Temporary Accommodation Service to ensure those families can access safe housing. We are also working urgently to restore access to cut-off communities following significant damage to State Highway 35 (East Coast) and State Highway 25 (Coromandel).
Today the Government has announced initial support for those affected. It includes:
* $1.2 million through Mayoral Relief Funds to meet urgent community needs.
* $1 million to reimburse marae that stepped up to provide welfare support and to strengthen their resilience for the future.
Additional recovery funding is already available across government, including:
* Up to $700 million through the Natural Hazards Commission for claims.
* Over $700 million for emergency repairs to roads and highways.
* $7.2 million for emergency waste clean-up.
* Ongoing support for rural communities through MPI and Rural Support Trusts
* Mental health and financial assistance via Health NZ and the Ministry of Social Development.
I have also appointed Hon Chris Penk as Associate Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery to support Minister Mark Mitchell and strengthen coordination across government agencies to make sure people are getting the support they need.
The National-led government is committed to standing with affected communities and ensuring they receive the support they need to recover and rebuild.
