John,

Since Operation Metro Surge began, federal immigration agents have shot three people in Minneapolis — two of them fatally.

Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis VA who his coworkers say was the first to jump in and help, should still be with us, as should Renee Good.

On Saturday, my office and the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed a lawsuit to prevent tampering or destruction of evidence related to Alex Pretti’s shooting. We asked the court to take immediate action so state investigators can conduct a fair, thorough investigation — and a judge granted a temporary order to preserve that evidence.

My team and I were back in court today, arguing for a restraining order that would put an end to the unlawful occupation of our state. The judge hasn’t ruled yet, but we’re pressing forward.

Make no mistake: the federal government targeted Minnesota because of what we value and how we vote. We take care of the most vulnerable among us. We welcome immigrants and refugees who are seeking a better life. And for the past three elections, we’ve voted against Trump.

If the Trump administration thought we were going to give up, roll over, and comply with this tyranny, they didn’t know Minnesota. They know us now.

We are not afraid, and we are not tired. We will keep fighting — for justice, for the rule of law, and for our communities.

In solidarity,

Keith Ellison
