This week, ICE murdered a second person in Minneapolis, 37-year-old VA nurse Alex Pretti. The execution comes on the heels of a historic strike and mass demonstrations across the country. We won’t back down. Join DSA-LA for an action, training, or community event this week. This movement needs all of us.
If you’re new to DSA or ready to get more involved, our upcoming chapter meeting this Saturday is the perfect place to find out what we’re all about and get tapped in.

Chapter Meeting and Organizing Campaign Launch
|
Saturday, January 31, 2:00–5:00 pm
We’re going big for our first chapter meeting of the year! Join us to learn about our organizing efforts against ICE, meet the candidates who will bring socialist power to City Hall, and find out how to get involved with DSA-LA’s work with Palestine solidarity, housing and homelessness, climate justice, fighting fascism, public education, and more.
Participate in the D-SwAp! Have something great that you just don’t need? Bring it to the chapter meeting for someone else to take home and enjoy. Please, nothing larger than a microwave and be sure to claim anything you bring that isn’t taken by the end of the meeting. Learn more in our D-SwAp guidelines.

Call and E-mail LA City Council to Defend Measure ULA
|
Measure ULA is under attack!
ULA, which has raised over a billion dollars to fund services for tenants such as Right to Counsel, rental assistance, tenant anti-harassment enforcement, and affordable housing development, is under serious threat. Land developers and their supporters hate Measure ULA, claiming that it prevents them for building affordable housing, a claim that is not supported by the data. Tomorrow morning, the Council will vote on a motion that will create a ballot initiative for the June election asking Angelenos to exempt sales of new multifamily residential constructions from the tax for the 15 years after the building is built. This change will undermine Measure ULA and the tenant services that it funds, and could embolden the capitalist interests who hate Measure ULA to launch further attacks against it down the line.
We need all hands on deck TODAY to call and text our city council and demand that they reject this motion. And tomorrow, we’ll be showing up early for a press conference by the ULA coalition, before giving public comment in opposition to this motion (and to oppose a separate motion by Airbnb to deregulate short term rentals in the City). More info on tomorrow’s action here.
RSVP for a list of city council office numbers and a link to email the council.

Thursday, January 29, 6:30–8:00 pm
Are you new or newly returning to DSA? To Los Angeles? To the Left? Then join us for DSA 101!
At this orientation, we’ll talk about what capitalism is, how it functions, and why socialism is ideologically opposed to it. Participants will also learn about the history of our organization and our chapter in particular, the current projects we’re working on, and how you can get involved. This is not a lecture, but a meeting for new and veteran organizers to ground ourselves in socialist theory and discuss together how we can put it into action.
