Friend, Mitch McConnell just unveiled his plan for the next round of coronavirus relief. And it’s nowhere near what we need to keep families and small businesses afloat during this crisis. This plan is needlessly stingy. Not only does Mitch’s plan push state and local governments off a financial cliff, it slashes weekly federal unemployment payments by 66%—and makes it much, much more difficult for workers to recover lost wages going forward. For a state like ours where over 1 million people have filed for unemployment, that’s a recipe for disaster. It’s not just that this proposal is so weak—it’s the fact it took Mitch months to come up with this plan, knowing that critical unemployment relief for millions of Americans expires this week. Because he played politics with this and turned one crisis into another, so many families are going to face August needlessly short on rent, utilities, medicine, and even food. This once-in-a-lifetime crisis has exposed Mitch McConnell for what he truly is: hyperpartisan, power-hungry, and only in it for himself. If he is willing to leave millions of unemployed Americans unable to make ends meet, he should lose his job. If you can, chip in today, and let’s do everything we can to make this Mitch’s last term in office. The truth is, we need leaders who refuse to govern from crisis to crisis—Amy’s plan is comprehensive and helps fight both the virus itself and the economic crisis that has developed because of it. There are three main pillars:
