John,
Our communities are made up of migrants from all over the world. But the narrative about immigrants in this country doesn't always reflect that. Black migrants are often left out of the conversation on immigration, despite facing the same challenges as many non-Black immigrants in addition to anti-Black racism.
That's why Families Belong Together is collaborating with Black immigrant artists from around the country to create a series of murals celebrating Black immigrants in three cities. We just unveiled these beautiful murals in Houston (TX), Miami (FL), and Long Island (NY). Watch the video below to learn more about this exciting project, then share it with your friends.
Nearly 4 million Black immigrants live in the US today. While many Black immigrants can share success stories as leaders and innovators in industry, the arts, and sciences, many are also subjected to this country's cruel immigration enforcement system.
An estimated 11,000 Black immigrants are DACA recipients. Despite only making up 7% of the total immigrant population, Black immigrants are disproportionately targeted for deportation by our immigration enforcement system.
That's why addressing anti-Black racism is fundamental to the fight for migrant justice. And the first step towards doing that is making sure our narratives about immigrants reflect the diversity of who immigrants actually are.
It's time to change the conversation. Share the wonderful artwork that we've helped put on display and help shift the narrative about what immigrants look like.
Let's do this,
Kimberly Selden
