Every January, WRI President & CEO Ani Dasgupta examines the global trends in environment and development that define the year ahead. In 2026, the question is no longer if the transition will happen, but how. Who pays, who benefits and who gets left behind?
2025 was a tumultuous year. On the one hand, we saw encouraging progress as renewable energy generation soared and electric vehicle sales broke records. On the other, nations like the United States backpedaled on climate action while global development aid decreased significantly. Around the world, we see two sharply contrasting narratives. Will the economic transition ahead be essential for security and prosperity? Or will it hinder economic progress?
This year’s Stories to Watch will explore three core concerns at the heart of this debate: *economic growth, affordability and jobs.*
Each story combines insights from WRI experts and on-the-ground solutions in action. Which path will countries, governments and communities choose this year?
