John,

Writing blank checks to Donald Trump’s rogue, reckless, and unaccountable ICE forces being deployed against people in our own cities is dangerous. It is wrong. And it is a betrayal of the values this country claims to stand for.

These are armed agents operating with sweeping power, little oversight, and a political green light from a president who has shown again and again that he does not respect the Constitution, the rule of law, or human life.



Yet seven Democratic Members of Congress voted to fund DHS and ICE without real limits, real accountability, or real guardrails.

I do not understand how Democrats can look at this moment and refuse to take a stand.

Because this is not a messaging problem.

This is not a polling problem.

This is a moral crisis.

So I ask a few simple questions:

• If we Democrats don’t take a stand here, when will we? 
• How many more have to die? 
• How much more trampling of the constitution has to happen? 
• How many more immigrants, like my parents, have to be profiled? Detained? Abused? 
• How many more 5 year olds have to be held as bait? 
• How many more parents, like those of Alex Pretti, will have to write letters the day after their son is killed responding to this administration’s slander? 
• How many more kids, like those of Renee Good, have to learn their mom was murdered? 
• When do we say enough? 
• If we can’t fight for the soul of our country now, when will we? 

I will never stand idly by as DHS, Trump, Kristi Noem, and Stephen Miller trample the Constitution and let ICE agents murder our people. I will actually fight back in Congress. Demand that ICE be dismantled, that Kristi Noem and other leaders be impeached, that agents be personally held accountable for their crimes. 

I am a first-generation Mexican-American son of immigrants. I fought for human rights as an attorney and have served as a military officer and lawyer representing soldiers. This moment requires courage and moral clarity, not cowardice and capitulation to the tyranny we are seeing on our streets every day.
