Hi Friend,
Today, I'm sharing hopeful news that proves investigations can spark real, systemic transformation.
You may remember last year's investigation into Manning Beef, a Pico Rivera slaughterhouse that for decades symbolized the cruelty and secrecy of industrial animal agriculture. After years of advocacy and scrutiny, the facility is now in bankruptcy proceedings—and a once unthinkable opportunity has emerged.
A cow hangs bleeding from the slaughter line after being stabbed in the head at Manning Beef.
The City of Pico Rivera has told us it is hoping to purchase the Manning Beef property, with a clear commitment that it never again resumes slaughter operations. Instead, city leaders are evaluating several potential future uses for the property—reimagining it as affordable housing, a community park, or a sustainable business providing future-facing jobs.
This is what hope looks like.
Actor and longtime animal advocate Joaquin Phoenix has stepped forward in support of the City's vision. Phoenix, who helped rescue two cows from the facility in 2020, shared this moving statement:
"In 2020, I stood outside Manning Beef and looked into the eyes of two cows—Liberty and Indigo—who were moments from slaughter. With the unexpected compassion of owner Anthony DiMaria, we saved them that day, and they now live peacefully at Farm Sanctuary. That moment showed me what's possible when we choose mercy over profit. I'm calling on city leaders to ensure this property never again becomes a place of killing, but instead transforms into something that serves the community—affordable housing, green space, or a plant-based food hub that creates sustainable jobs. Liberty and Indigo showed me that compassion is our greatest strength, and now we have the chance to prove it by turning a site of death into a beacon of life and hope."
Pico Rivera City leadership is calling this moment a "rare opportunity" to reimagine a long-standing industrial site in a way that improves quality of life and reflects shared values of purpose and compassion. It will also mean the end of cow-slaughtering anywhere in Los Angeles.
But we need to act now. Manning Beef is going to a Sheriff's auction this Wednesday, January 28th, and we need to show prospective buyers how many of us stand firmly against reopening this facility for slaughter. Please sign our petition to demonstrate how many people want to see a cow-slaughter-free LA. If you're in the Los Angeles area, we invite you to join us at 9:00 AM at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse (111 N. Hill Street, Rm 125B, Los Angeles, CA 90012) to send a clear message: there is no support for cow slaughter in our community.
