John, we know that defeating Citizens United is a tall order.
We also understand that people may be skeptical. That’s why we want to make sure we tell you exactly what we’re doing, how it works, and where your donations go.
No catchy slogans, no fearmongering, just our approach to problem-solving. It’s the least we can do as we ask you to chip in today.
Other people have tried to stop Citizens United before. How are you different?
The Citizens United decision makes it impossible to use campaign-finance law to limit corporate influence in our politics, and there’s no realistic path to overturning it anytime soon. That’s why we’re using two centuries of foundational Supreme Court corporation law to revoke the political spending powers of corporations instead. This doesn’t overturn Citizens United, but it does make it irrelevant.
How does your strategy work, and why is it called The Montana Plan?
We’re rolling out our legal strategy here in Montana as a ballot initiative, which means our neighbors would be able to enshrine these rights in our state constitution this year.
In Montana, Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike have come together many times to fend off corporate greed. Recent polls show that over 70% of voters like our ballot initiative, so if we make it onto the ballot, we know we will win.
Once we win here, we’ll be able to apply the precedent in all other states — in fact, we’re fielding calls from plenty of other states who want to follow our lead. Montana is just the beginning!
Sounds good to me! What’s the next step, and how can I help?
We’ve already refiled our ballot initiative language with the state after our state Supreme Court ruled our initial filing as “legally insufficient.”
Once we shake off the latest challenge, we’ll kick off our signature collection process to qualify for the ballot. We need 100,000 signatures across Big Sky Country from people who want to curb corporate influence on our politics, and end the “dark money” loophole while we’re at it.
The best way you can help us today is by making a financial contribution of $20, $8, or even just $3. Your donations are going towards the essentials, from keeping our lawyer on retainer to navigate legal challenges, to hosting trainings for our volunteers from around the state, to supplying water bottles for the people getting ready to knock doors.
This is a grassroots movement fueled by everyday people who want to stop millionaires and billionaires from buying out our elections. Please, stand with us and say: our democracy is not for sale!
Thank you for your support. We’ll keep you in the loop on every update as we work to enact The Montana Plan!
