Friend –
The Senate is expected to vote this week on a Department of Homeland
Security funding bill that would expand funding for ICE and Border Patrol
while continuing to shield those agencies from real accountability.
Congressional Republicans are pushing this bill forward with full
knowledge of what it enables. They are choosing to expand the power of
agencies that have already demonstrated a willingness to abuse that power,
while refusing to include basic safeguards or enforceable oversight.
The killings in Minneapolis have made the consequences of this approach
impossible to ignore. Federal immigration agents have escalated operations
with deadly results, leaving families devastated and communities demanding
answers that have yet to come. These actions reflect a broader pattern in
which ICE and Border Patrol operate with impunity, emboldened by a Trump
regime that has treated cruelty as policy and accountability as a threat.
Rather than confront this reality, the DHS funding bill before the Senate
doubles down on it. The bill does not rein in dangerous enforcement
tactics, does not require transparency when agents abuse their authority,
and does not establish consequences for misconduct. It asks Congress to
authorize more funding while looking away from the harm these agencies are
causing.
Democratic senators have said they will oppose this bill, and that
matters. But Republicans are counting on this vote moving quickly and
quietly, with just enough political cover to get it through. Sustained
public pressure across every channel is what keeps accountability from
being negotiated away.
That is why calling your Senators now is so important, even if you have
already signed our petition or have taken action online. Calls reinforce
the demands lawmakers are already hearing and signal that this issue is
urgent, visible, and not going away as the vote approaches.
With a Senate vote expected at any moment this week, [ [link removed] ]please call your
Senators as soon as possible and demand that they vote against the current
DHS funding bill unless it includes enforceable accountability for ICE and
Border Patrol. >>

If Congress continues to fund ICE and Border Patrol without
accountability, it will not be a failure of process or a legislative
misstep. It will be an utter moral failure. It will reflect a conscious
decision to protect unchecked power over human lives and to normalize
impunity in federal law enforcement. Senators who make that choice should
understand that it will define their legacy and that constituents will
remember who enabled abuse when accountability was plainly within reach.
In solidarity,
People For the American Way
