Over the weekend, Parent Union founder and president Cecilia Iglesias spoke out against Governor Newsom's latest decree that hurts not only our students, but the most vulnerable among them.

"Gov. Gavin Newsom dealt California’s low-income and minority families a blow when he announced that nearly all the state’s schools won’t reopen their doors this fall due to COVID-19. The lack of in-person schooling disproportionately hurts the most vulnerable who lack the means for distance learning and can’t make interim educational arrangements. Adding insult to this injury, a close look at the evidence suggests that schools can indeed reopen safely.

Decades of research demonstrate the importance of in- person schooling for students’ academic and social development. Classrooms offer a safe environment to encourage collaborative and secure learning, with immediate feedback and socialization.

These benefits are especially profound for minorities."

In short, despite ([link removed]) all evidence ([link removed]) that ([link removed]) students are at ([link removed]) low risk and ([link removed]) classrooms can and must reopen ([link removed]) , many minority and low-income students will get no proper schooling this fall.
