Friend — This week we celebrate the life of Representative John Lewis.

It started over the weekend when friends, family, and the public paid tribute to the late Civil Rights leader in his hometown of Troy, Alabama.

On Sunday, he made his last journey over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, en route to lie in state at the Alabama State Capitol.

And now this evening, Congressman Lewis will become the first Black lawmaker to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC, after which members of the public will pay their respects.

Congressman Lewis’s life in so many ways touched the lives of every one of us.

His belief in “good trouble” — the moral and necessary civil disobedience that made us pay attention to the reality of racism in America — is in part the reason Black Americans can elect leaders that looked like them, myself included.

Last week, I was fortunate enough to offer my own thoughts and condolences to my late friend on the House floor — and I want to invite you to share your own. You can use this link here to write a message to Congressman Lewis’ family.
