AAAFund Condemns Deadly Immigration Enforcement Actions in Minnesota, Calls for Accountability and Reform

Washington, D.C. – The Asian American Action Fund (AAAFund) condemns the recent federal immigration enforcement actions in Minneapolis that resulted in the losses of life, devastating families and deeply impacting the broader Minnesota community. These events, occurring just days after the nation observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day, stand in stark contrast to Dr. King’s enduring call for justice, dignity, and restraint of state power.

AAAFund stands in solidarity with the families of those killed and injured and offers its deepest condolences. No family should lose a loved one at the hands of federal agents operating without transparency, accountability, or adequate safeguards.

AAAFund is especially alarmed by the growing reliance on ICE officers and federal agents who appear to lack appropriate civil enforcement training and experience, yet are deployed into volatile community settings. Reports suggesting recruitment and promotion practices that prioritize ideological alignment over professional judgment and de-escalation only heighten these concerns. Immigration enforcement is a civil function, not a militarized operation, and when competence is replaced by ideology, lives are put at risk.

“Dr. King taught us that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” said Albert Shen, National Chair of AAAFund. “From Japanese American incarceration to today’s unchecked ICE actions, history shows us the dangers of valuing force over due process. We stand with the families who are grieving and call on Congress to act.”

AAAFund calls on Congress to defund ICE enforcement operations that lack transparency and accountability, establish independent civilian oversight of federal law enforcement, and protect civil rights and due process for all communities.

Shen continues, saying: “Honoring Dr. King’s legacy requires more than reflection. It requires action to restrain abuses of power, protect human life, and ensure that federal authority serves justice rather than fear.”
