Today marks the
anniversary of the ratification of the 14th Amendment to the
Constitution, which enshrined into law a uniquely American
promise:

When this amendment was
drafted more than 150 years ago, its authors purposely included
language that would prevent future lawmakers from changing it
based solely on the shifting political whims of the day.

But now there are some lawmakers who hope to make an end-run
around our Constitution and use their own narrow criteria to
determine who gets to be an American citizen. The President and
Republicans in Congress are trying to eliminate these
long-standing protections simply because it serves their
anti-immigrant agenda.
