Women and girls in Gaza are all too familiar with threats during violent conflict: hunger, disease, and heightened risk of abuse and exploitation.

But as the winter cold deepens, women and girls in Gaza must endure another set of dangers. Pregnant women have no choice but to deliver their babies in freezing temperatures — putting their life and their newborns’ lives on the line. Children and the elderly are dying from hypothermia and unsafe conditions.

Baby Aisha is not the only loss recently. Another family experienced the worst: Nariman and her husband Mahmoud awoke one morning to find their baby Sila , who was less than three weeks old, was not moving.

"I woke up in the morning and told my husband that the baby hadn't stirred for a while. He uncovered her face and found her blue, biting her tongue, with blood coming out of her mouth…”

Sila is one of several newborns to have died of hypothermia in Gaza.

Their family, including their two- and four-year-old, has been displaced over 10 times since the conflict began, and currently huddles in a paper-thin tent on the beach in southern Gaza without blankets, heating, or adequate shelter to protect them from the extreme cold and piercing winds.
