Governor Walz Statement Amid Federal Government’s Continued Presence in Minnesota
________________________________________________________________________
Governor Walz released the following statement amid the federal government’s ongoing presence in Minnesota.
*“Mr. President, Minnesota invites you to see our values in action. Come see how communities from all walks of life are working together, and how the spirit of this state refuses to be defined by division or fear. I invite you to join me, and others in our community, to help restore calm and order and reaffirm that true public safety comes from shared purpose, trust, and respect.*
*“But let me be absolutely clear: The State of Minnesota will not be drawn into political theater. This Justice Department investigation, sparked by calls for accountability in the face of violence, chaos, and the killing of Renee Good, does not seek justice. It is a partisan distraction. Minnesotans are more concerned with safety and peace than baseless legal tactics aimed at intimidating public servants standing shoulder to shoulder with their community.*
*“My focus has always been protecting the people of this state. Families are scared. Kids are afraid to go to school. Small businesses are hurting. Police chiefs in Minnesota announced that federal agents are aggressively pulling over off duty cops based on the color of their skin. Kids are being detained and sent to detention centers in Texas. ICE is trampling on the constitution, telling agents they don’t need warrants to bust down people’s doors. **A mother is dead, and the people responsible have yet to be held accountable. That’s where the energy of the federal government should be directed: toward restoring trust, accountability, and real law and order, not political retaliation. *
*“Minnesota will not be intimidated into silence and neither will I.”*

Governor Walz recognized the 40th anniversary of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Governor joined celebrations at the Ordway Center for Performing Arts, elevating Dr. King’s messages of justice, persistence, and mobilization against systems of oppression.
*“Today serves as a stark reminder of the legacy of Dr. King and his contributions to social justice, nonviolence, and freedom,” *said Governor Walz.* “As we grapple today with unjust actions of the federal government, we are guided by Dr. King’s teachings of resilience and peaceful protest. I am proud to recognize the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and I ask Minnesotans to mark this day by following his words in peacefully speaking up for the weak and for the voiceless.”*
Every year since 1986, the Governor’s Council on the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday has hosted a statewide event. 2026 marks the 40th annual State of Minnesota Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Echoes of Unity.” To recognize the significant anniversary, the event series included a historical landmark tour, a youth summit, and a community march, leading up to the grand finale celebration at the Ordway. The Governor also proclaimed today Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The Governor’s Council on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday coordinates and executes observances of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's birthday at the state level in Minnesota and ensures that Dr. King’s memory and his mission are kept alive. In May 2023, Governor Walz announced the continuation of the Governor’s Council on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday through Executive Order 23-08 [ [link removed] ]. The council was first established by Governor Rudy Perpich in 1986 and has been re-established or continued by succeeding governors.
