Education

PFLAG Academy Online: How to Stop Arguing About Religion but Make Your Point

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, July 28th, at 8:30PM ET/5:30PM PT, we present our next PFLAG Academy Online session, with Bob Minor from the Fairness Project.

Religious objections still interfere with the equality of LGBTQ+ people, and arguments from the Bible, tradition, and religious authorities, are cited by critics to justify discrimination and abuse. We've heard the arguments and responses for over 50 years yet they continue, producing more heat than light as well as frustration for the arguer. Few walk away from such discussions feeling good about their responses. This workshop’s goal is to put religious arguments into perspective, not to argue about, for example “what the Bible really says,” but to explore strategies to defuse and redirect even the most difficult arguments effectively into the issues that lie beneath the religious arguments where the healing can begin. All attendees will receive a PDF copy of the booklet When You’re Having a Religious Argument.

Advocacy

The 2020 Census is under attack

Last week, President Trump issued a memorandum on excluding so-called "illegal aliens" from being counted in the 2020 Census. As required under Section 2 of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, apportionment is based on the number of persons living in the United States: “Persons” means “persons,” and that means everyone. PFLAG National swiftly responded regarding this unconstitutional action (which uses particularly cruel and disrespectful language). We also have your back: Earlier this year, we signed on to the Census Protection Pledge, joining with over 275 organizations standing at the ready to monitor and use every tool necessary to work to protect the integrity and safety of the 2020 Census.

The Constitutional Accountability Center has created this resource, an easy-to-read issue brief which includes historical information about who has been counted in the census.

Take action by reading the brief, and then be sure to participate in the Census to ensure that all persons are counted; doing so online takes roughly five-to-seven minutes.
