I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines about Donald Trump’s reckless obsession with seizing Greenland from Denmark.
Like so many moments in politics, I know it’s easy to read something like that and shrug it off as political theater or traditional Trump saber-rattling.
But I keep thinking about the people who don’t have the option to tune it out.
Denmark is one of our allies and a member of NATO, an alliance that has been our greatest force for peace and security for more than 80 years. Now, Trump is fundamentally undermining this relationship by threatening our NATO allies and casting doubt on our shared defense commitments.
On Truth Social, Donald Trump claimed that NATO would not defend the U.S. if we were attacked. That’s simply not true. The only time NATO’s collective defense has been invoked was after 9/11, and it was invoked in our defense.
Denmark answered that call. They sent their citizens to serve alongside Americans, and they lost more people per capita than any other country.
Now those same families are listening to the president of the United States talk about taking their land. In Greenland, parents are saying their kids aren’t sleeping at night, afraid of American invasion. That fear is real, and it’s being created by words spoken from the most powerful office in the world.
This is how global stability erodes — when allies begin to wonder whether they’ll pay the price for reckless leadership.
