A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

It has been over one year since President Donald Trump took office for the second time. The results of his first year are in: Trump's policies have been catastrophic for Rhode Islanders — over 40,000 Rhode Islanders are seeing their health care costs rise excessively because the Senate did not extend Affordable Care Act tax credits, families are experiencing high prices making it more difficult to put food on the table and pay for housing and utilities, communities across the country feel less safe in our democracy, and our longstanding global alliances are facing threats making the world less stable.

From voting against Trump's disastrous laws to speaking out against his harmful policies, proposing legislation, and conversing with neighbors to show that I stand with our communities in Congress, I have been on the front lines fighting to reject the policies attacking our communities and our collective ability to thrive.

Our nation deserves better. You deserve better. I will keep fighting for our health care, for respect on the global stage, for families to better afford putting food on the table, and to turn the page on the seemingly daily onslaught of chaos, confusion, and challenge to a better day. We can get to better days, but we’ll have to stay at work and stick together.

Sincerely,

Member of Congress

To prevail over the forces of injustice, Dr. King taught that we must harness the power of the ‘soul force.’

Joined Barrington’s celebration of civil rights and spoke about our shared commitment to carrying the torch with my work in Congress.

Addressed the Ministers Alliance of Rhode Island 43rd Annual Scholarship Breakfast to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and speak about how my work in Congress carries on his legacy.

Their work to expand education access and opportunity embodies Dr. King’s spirit. I look forward to continuing the fight for justice with our church leaders.

Spoke with neighbors about my work in Congress and celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service with Serve Rhode Island and community volunteers at Farm Fresh Rhode Island as they prepared more than 20,000 meals for our neighbors in need – what an incredible way to honor Dr. King!

I will keep championing AmeriCorps’s vital service to our communities in Congress.

For more than 100 years, the Newport County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has been at the forefront of the fight to expand equality and opportunity for all Rhode Islanders.

It was an honor to speak with Rhode Islanders about the challenges Congress is facing.

I appreciated gathering this MLK Day and their partnership in the ongoing fight for justice.

Concluded the holiday with the MLK State Holiday Commission’s commemoration at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Providence.

Inspired by the community leaders who ensure that justice is not just promised, but it is practiced. I spoke about how I am bringing that conviction to my work in Congress.

Delivering $11 Million to Rhode Island Communities

Image

This week, I secured $2,675,000 in additional Community Project Funding for Rhode Island’s First Congressional District as part of the government funding legislation that passed the House of Representatives yesterday. I cannot wait to see these dollars at work in our communities making them safer, stronger, and more resilient.

Making sure Rhode Island communities have the resources they need to succeed is a key pillar of my work in Congress. I am proud to have secured more than $11 million in our District for projects as diverse as police radios and upgraded sewer systems this year. This newly announced $2.6 million investment in Rhode Island’s First Congressional District will enhance flood response systems in Providence, public library renovations in Cumberland, and the reconstruction of the Greystone bridge for the Town of Smithfield.

Standing Against ICE Funding

CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo details his no vote against the Republican ICE funding bill.

Yesterday, I voted NO on funding the Department of Homeland Security. The policies of Trump and his Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, have turned ICE into an out-of-control paramilitary force of masked men terrorizing our communities.

Rather than receive due process, immigrants and citizens alike are subject to warrantless search and detention, forced to prove their citizenship to move freely in our cities and towns, and targeted with violence if they don’t comply or exercise their First Amendment rights. I cannot in good conscience vote to fund the Department of Homeland Security and ICE’s unchecked power.

I support our TSA agents providing security at our airports, Coast Guard members protecting our waters, and our federal emergency response enterprise, but we must meet this moment with moral clarity. We cannot and must not empower Trump’s police state policies to trample on the rights of the residents of our nation.

Demanding Answers on Trump’s Activity in Venezuela

I met with Maria Corina Machado, an opposition leader in Venezuela, alongside other members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

I am demanding answers from Trump about his policies in Venezuela. Number one: What’s your plan?

Addressing the Impact of Republican Policies on Cost of Living

Image
CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo outlines the dangers of Republican policies.

Instead of making billionaires pay their fair share, Republican policies are balancing the books on the backs of caregivers, seniors, and people with disabilities. Their Big, Ugly Law stole health insurance from 15 million Americans, and the Senate not voting to extend Affordable Care Act Tax Credits has dramatically raised the cost of health insurance for another 22 million.

In the House Budget Committee, I stood up for our state as too many Rhode Islanders face relentless hardships caused by Republican policies.

Supporting Brown Students at the Start of a New Term

CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo addresses the House of Representatives to remember the tragic shooting at Brown University.

This week, students at Brown University returned to campus to start a new semester after the December mass shooting took the lives of Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzakov and injured 9 other students. My thoughts remain with the victims, their loved ones, and our whole community during this difficult time.

For the Brown students who returned to campus this week, I want them to know – we have your back and we are all thinking of you. If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out for help. As Brown, Providence, and Rhode Island continue to heal, I join countless others in making sure our community, our city, and our state have the support we need to recover. We are on a long journey, but know we are on it together.

Countering Trump's Policies in the Courts

The Trump administration's policies are being challenged and overturned in court. The American people are standing up against the administration, and the courts continue to side with the people.

Recent Courtroom Wins:

TRUMP'S JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ADMITS DEFEAT — The Department of Justice dropped its appeal after the Trump administration attempted to impose immigration enforcement requirements on transportation grants. A judge had previously ruled against the administration.

COURT BLOCKS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION FROM OBTAINING VOTER REGISTRATION DATA — A federal court dismissed the Trump administration's lawsuit suing 21 states after they refused to hand over voter data, including birthdays, driver's license numbers, and Social Security numbers.

JUDGE RULES CUTS TO CLEAN ENERGY FUNDING ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL — A federal judge overruled the Trump administration, saying it acted unconstitutionally when it canceled $7.6 billion in clean energy grant funding for projects in 16 Democratic states.

Supporting Our NATO Allies

CLICK HERE TO WATCH: Congressman Amo stands up to Trump's policies bullying Greenland.

Republicans have not addressed Trump’s policies that persistently threaten NATO and our allies.

I am demanding action and answers — like passing my NO NATO for Purchase Act to stop the United States from using your taxpayer dollars to buy Greenland or any other NATO ally.
