Some of the leaders who get the least attention end up having significant sway over major questions before our government, such as...
Whether families can afford to go to the doctor.
Whether people can exercise their freedom to vote.
Whether children can go to well-funded public schools.
Whether communities have to live in fear of gun violence.
Whether reproductive freedom is a reality or a rallying cry.
Whether the criminal legal system delivers justice or perpetuates inequities.
Healthcare, voting rights, education, gun safety, reproductive freedom, criminal justice reform — these are all issues where state legislatures wield immense power.
And these are all issues where it could be far harder, if not impossible, to achieve progress for years to come if anti-democracy extremists get their way in an upcoming Supreme Court decision that’s expected soon.
If the court decides to gut Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act — the central safeguard against racially discriminatory redistricting — GOP legislatures across 10 Southern states could redraw voting maps to decimate fair representation and minority political power in state legislatures.
By eliminating around 191 state legislative seats currently held by Democrats, they could wipe out two out of every five districts where Black or Hispanic voters make up the majority — erasing nearly half of all Black-majority districts in the South.
Communities of color would lose their representatives in the halls of power where key decisions get made.
And GOP legislatures could lock in Republican supermajorities for a generation — stripping Democratic governors of veto power and blocking progress on issues that touch people’s daily lives.
We’re getting ready to act fast in the event of this Supreme Court ruling. From grassroots organizing and public education to coalition building and pressure campaigns, we will fight our hearts out to stop politicians from rigging new voting maps, and there will be plenty of ways for this whole team to be involved.
But a state-by-state effort will take real resources — and we need to ask if you can take action by pitching in a donation today. Every contribution helps shore up the defenses of our democracy, so everyone can make their voices heard on the issues that make the greatest difference in their lives. [[link removed]]
