ACTION NEEDED
Patient Advocates Warn: Federal Hemp
Changes Will Cut Off Medicine for Millions
Dear Friend,
This week, Americans for Safe Access released a new policy
briefing, Protecting Patient Access: A Compassionate
Response to Changing Federal Hemp Laws.
It is not a white paper. It is a guidance document for
state leaders.
New federal hemp definitions take effect in November 2026. When
they do, most full-spectrum cannabinoid medicines will disappear from
lawful commerce—cutting off access for millions of patients unless
states act.
|
|
The briefing carries a simple warning:
“Silence from state leaders
today will mean suffering for patients tomorrow.”
|
We launched the
report with a national Stakeholder Webinar featuring the perspectives
of physicians, pharmacists, veterans, and patient advocates. Together,
they made one thing clear: federal action will not fix this in
time. |
The briefing dispels two dangerous
myths: |
|
|
|
Myth #1
President Trump’s Executive
Order solved this problem.
It did
not.
Executive action cannot override statutory limits, and the
political blowback from anti-cannabis members of Congress makes
near-term legislative fixes even less likely.
|
|
Myth # 2
Rescheduling cannabis will
restore access.
It will
NOT.
Even if rescheduling happens before November, it will not legalize
medical cannabis, create patient pathways, or preserve access to
full-spectrum medicines
|
|
Until Congress
creates a true federal medical cannabis program, patients will
continue to depend on their states for protection and
access. |
Friend,
We need your help to ensure State Policymakers Lead with
Compassion!
|
#1
Help us put this briefing directly into governors’
hands.
Next week, ASA will be at the National Governors Association
meeting. We need to raise $5,000 in the next few days
to print and distribute hard copies of this briefing to governors and
their senior staff.
|
|
|
Anyone who contributes $50 or more by Monday, January 26th, will receive a printed copy of
the briefing as a thank-you. |
|
|
#2
TAKE
ACTION!
We are urging patients and advocates to send this briefing to their
legislators, governors, and local media. Momentum matters right
now.
|
|
#3 Alert Your
Network!
We need to mobilize!
Forward this email to your friends, family, and colleagues with a
personal message to let them know what is at stake!
|
|
We want to recognize ASA members, donors, and sponsors for making
this briefing possible and to ASA Advisors and volunteers for their
contributions, especially Karen Jaynes, Nicky Robins, Amy Marasco,
Brandy Zink, Dr. Patricia Frye, and Codi Peterson, PharmD.
Your support has always been what makes ASA effective in
moments like this—when policy shifts collide with real
lives.
|
|
With your help, we can make sure this report does not sit on a
website while patients lose access. We can put it in the hands of the
people who can act.
|
|
With gratitude and resolve,
