A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

This week’s update reflects the breadth of work taking place across Nottingham – from major investment and regeneration projects, to the everyday actions that help keep our city welcoming, safe and vibrant.

You’ll see progress on the £20 million redevelopment of Bulwell town centre, continued investment in our school buildings, and the impact of our Clean Champions volunteers, whose dedication makes a real difference to neighbourhoods across the city. We’re also proud to share how Nottingham Light Night will once again bring creativity, culture and energy into our streets, celebrating what ‘home’ means to people across our communities.

This week also marks an important moment for reflection. *Holocaust Memorial Day takes place next week*, and it is a time for us to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides, and to reflect on the consequences of hatred, prejudice and division. As a city, we remain committed to promoting understanding, compassion and respect, and to standing firmly against antisemitism, racism and all forms of hatred.

Next week, we will also come together as a city to mark *Holocaust Memorial Day*. This is a moment to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust and in later genocides, and to reflect on the consequences of hatred and intolerance. Nottingham remains committed to promoting understanding, compassion and respect, and to standing firmly against antisemitism, racism and all forms of hatred.

Next week, we will also come together as a city to mark *Holocaust Memorial Day*. A civic commemoration event will take place at the *Council House on Tuesday at 17:15*, led by the *Leader of the Council* and the *Lord Mayor*, alongside faith and community representatives. This is an important moment to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust and in later genocides, and to reflect on the consequences of hatred, prejudice and intolerance.

Light Night

Celebrating home at Nottingham Light Night

Nottingham Light Night returns on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 February, illuminating the city after dark with more than 30 immersive and interactive light-based installations, performances, and activities.

Many of this year’s commissioned works explore the theme of "home" – from installations conceived or created in Nottingham to pieces that reflect what home means to us all, including:


* "Parallels "at Old Market Square
* "The Cat That Slept For A Thousand Years" at Sneinton Market Square
* "Mycelium Network" at the Robin Hood Statue

More commissioned works, including installations by Nottingham-based artists at Nottingham Castle, St Mary’s Church, and Sneinton Market Avenues, will be announced soon in the full Light Night programme.

£3m investment to improve school buildings

We're set to invest almost £3 million to improve the safety, condition and energy efficiency of school buildings across the city.

The funding will support essential works such as roofing, heating and structural repairs at a number of schools. 

Improvements will be delivered during the school holidays where possible.

The funding comprises of a £2.65 million School Condition Allocation grant from the Department for Education and a further £273,186 in Devolved Formula Capital funding for maintained schools.

Clean Champions

Celebrating the impact of our Clean Champions

The final figures are in, and during 2025, our amazing Clean Champion volunteers helped remove 7,020 bags of litter from Nottingham’s streets.

That’s almost 1,000 more bags than in 2024

This incredible effort reflects the dedication of Clean Champions across the city, supported by better reporting of collected bags of litter, and increased engagement between the co-ordination with the community.

Together, we’re continuing to make Nottingham a cleaner, more welcoming place to live, work, study and enjoy.

A huge thank you to every Clean Champion who played a part.

?? Did you hear the announcement at Full Council last week?

Nottingham City Council has reduced its general fund debt by nearly £535 million over the last six years, from £827m to £292m.

Reducing debt helps lower borrowing costs and strengthens the Council’s financial position, meaning more money can be directed towards supporting and investing in the services Nottingham residents rely on, and providing greater stability for the future.

Work well under way on £20m Bulwell revamp

Construction work is going well on our fantastic £20m redevelopment of Bulwell town centre.

Contractors Willmott Dixon moved on to site towards the end of October last year to begin preparatory works for the project, which involves a total revamp of the much-loved Bogs area (see above), new-look Market Place and wider landscaping and improvements.

This has included so far:


* Taking up and replacing block paving in the Market Place, starting with the section outside B&M
* Channel drainage works in Market Place, Main Street and Commercial Road
* Excavation of the Bogs for drainage in readiness for surfacing and installation of new kiosk, play equipment and splash area 

Just a note that the Vere Street public toilets (inset) will close from Monday (26 January) for refurbishment. A new facility will be built and opened later in the spring.

Holocaust Memorial Day – Tuesday 27 January

Holocaust Memorial Day

Next week, Nottingham will mark Holocaust Memorial Day with a civic commemoration event led by the Leader of the Council and the Lord Mayor, alongside faith and community representatives.

The event will take place at the *Council House at 5pm*, providing an opportunity to remember the six million Jewish people murdered in the Holocaust, as well as the victims of subsequent genocides, and to reflect on the importance of standing against hatred, prejudice and discrimination in all its forms.

We encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect and remember.

🚨 Fly-tipping? CCTV is watching

CCTV

Thanks to routine CCTV monitoring and swift work by our Neighbourhood Safety Officers, a recent fly-tipping incident was identified, investigated and resulted in a £400 fine.

This is a reminder that illegal dumping has real consequences and that our teams are actively working to protect Nottingham’s streets, open spaces and communities.

If you see fly-tipping in your area, please report it so we can take action.
