A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Brothers and Sisters,

We have hit the ground running in 2026 and are committed to making full use of every moment Parliament is in session.

Canada’s Building Trades Unions has officially launched registration for our annual conference, "Canada's Future is Union-Made." Join us April 27–29, 2026 at the Hilton Lac Leamy in Gatineau, QC to connect, strategize, and build momentum for the work ahead. Spaces are limited and this year might be our most impressive lineup of speakers yet - register below to secure your spot.

Following our Canadian Executive Board meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, I spoke with Daily Commercial News about efforts to harmonize national safety standards and how this will benefit building trades members. Removing unnecessary regulatory barriers and aligning safety rules across provinces will expand work opportunities for our members nationwide. A harmonized approach to safety ensures our certified, mobile, and work-ready workforce can move across provinces to be where the work is. Read more from DCN here.

Sharing tradespeople from coast to coast is a long-standing Canadian tradition and continues to power our most ambitious projects. Recent statements from the provincial premier expressing a commitment to see union labour play a central role in the project are encouraging, but words must now translate into clear requirements that this work be done here at home. [...] There is a persistent narrative even amongst some here at home that we don’t have the skilled people we need to take on a project of this scale.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Ahead of Parliament’s return next week, several key ministers assembled a Canadian Labour Round Table, bringing together labour leaders from across the country and from a range of economic sectors to engage in a timely discussion on CUSMA and its importance to Canada’s skilled trades workforce. The round table was led by the Minister of Internal Trade, Dominic LeBlanc, and the Secretary of State for Labour, John Zerucelli.

This week, the General Board of Presidents convened for its annual meeting, bringing together Building Trades leaders from across North America. At a critical moment for our nations, the meeting provided a valuable opportunity to align on shared priorities and strengthen collaboration in response to an increasingly uncertain environment for our members. 
CBTU Canadian Executive Board Members, Colin Daniels from the Iron Workers and Russ Shewchuk from IBEW attended the Canadian Labour Round table with Minister of Internal Trade, Dominic LeBlanc, CBTU Executive Director Sean Strickland, and Secretary of State for Labour, John Zerucelli. Also in attendance were labour leaders from across Canada, including: Bea Brusk from Canadian Labour Council, Lana Payne from Unifor, Caroline Senneville from CSN, Steven Weisman from the Carpenters, and Mark Hennessy of UFCW.
MOU FOR CALGARY-BANFF PASSENGER RAIL
CBTU, Building Trades of Alberta (BTA), and Friends of Calgary Airport–Banff Rail (CABR) signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize collaboration in support of building the Calgary Airport–Downtown–Bow Valley–Banff passenger rail system.
 
The agreement signals a shared commitment to move from years of study to construction on one of Canada’s most shovel-ready passenger rail projects, creating good-paying union jobs, strengthening Alberta’s economy, and building confidence in Canada’s ability to deliver major infrastructure.
 
CABR represents an immediate opportunity to put Canada’s skilled tradespeople to work while diversifying Alberta’s economy. Designed primarily within an existing CPKC rail corridor and supported by MOUs with CPKC and the Canada Infrastructure Bank, the project is positioned to advance far more quickly than typical greenfield infrastructure. CABR was formally submitted in December 2025 to the federal Major Projects Office as a Project of National Interest.

BUILDING TRADES MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

This week marked the inaugural Building Trades Mental Health Week, an annual initiative dedicated to raising awareness of mental health and substance use supports available to members of Canada’s Building Trades Unions.

Mental health challenges can affect anyone, and this week is a reminder that many people experience periods of feeling low, especially during this time of year. If this resonates with you, know that you are not alone and that help is available.

À la suite de notre réunion du Conseil exécutif canadien avec le premier ministre Mark Carney, j'ai discuté avec le Daily Commercial News des efforts visant à harmoniser les normes de sécurité nationales et des avantages que cela apportera aux membres des métiers de la construction. La suppression des obstacles réglementaires inutiles et l'harmonisation des règles de sécurité entre les provinces élargiront les possibilités d'emploi pour nos membres à l'échelle nationale. Une approche harmonisée en matière de sécurité garantit que notre main-d'œuvre certifiée, mobile et prête à travailler peut se déplacer d'une province à l'autre pour se rendre là où se trouvent les emplois. Les récentes déclarations du premier ministre provincial, qui s'est engagé à ce que les syndicats jouent un rôle central dans le projet, sont encourageantes, mais les paroles doivent maintenant se traduire par des exigences claires pour que ce travail soit effectué ici, chez nous. CONNEXIONS COMMUNAUTAIRES
En prévision de la reprise des travaux du Parlement la semaine prochaine, plusieurs ministres clés ont organisé une table ronde canadienne sur le travail, réunissant des dirigeants syndicaux de tout le pays et de divers secteurs économiques afin de discuter en temps opportun de l'ACEUM et de son importance pour la main-d'œuvre qualifiée du Canada. La table ronde était présidée par le ministre du Commerce intérieur, Dominic LeBlanc, et le secrétaire d'État au Travail, John Zerucelli.

Cette semaine, le Conseil général des présidents s'est réuni pour son assemblée annuelle, réunissant les dirigeants des métiers de la construction de toute l'Amérique du Nord. À un moment critique pour nos nations, cette réunion a été l'occasion de s'accorder sur des priorités communes et de renforcer la collaboration afin de répondre à un environnement de plus en plus incertain pour nos membres. 
Les membres du comité exécutif canadien du SMCC, Colin Daniels, représentant les Iron Workers, et Russ Shewchuk, représentant l'IBEW, ont participé à la table ronde canadienne sur le travail avec le ministre du Commerce intérieur, Dominic LeBlanc, le directeur général du SMCC, Sean Strickland, et le secrétaire d'État au Travail, John Zerucelli. Étaient également présents des dirigeants syndicaux de tout le Canada, notamment Bea Brusk, du Conseil canadien du travail, et Lana Payne, d'Unifor, Caroline Senneville du CSN, Steven Weisman des Carpenters et Mark Hennessy de l'UFCW.
PROTOCOLE D'ACCORD
La SMCC, la Building Trades of Alberta (BTA) et les Friends of Calgary Airport–Banff Rail (CABR) ont signé un protocole d'entente (PE) afin d'officialiser leur collaboration en faveur de la construction du réseau ferroviaire voyageurs Calgary Airport–Downtown–Bow Valley–Banff.
 
Cet accord témoigne d'un engagement commun à passer de plusieurs années d'études à la construction de l'un des projets ferroviaires de transport de passagers les plus avancés du Canada, créant ainsi des emplois syndiqués bien rémunérés, renforçant l'économie de l'Alberta et renforçant la confiance dans la capacité du Canada à réaliser des infrastructures majeures.
 
Le CABR représente une occasion immédiate de mettre à l'œuvre les travailleurs qualifiés du Canada tout en diversifiant l'économie de l'Alberta. Conçu principalement dans le cadre d'un corridor ferroviaire existant de CPKC et soutenu par des protocoles d'entente avec CPKC et la Banque de l'infrastructure du Canada, le projet est en mesure d'avancer beaucoup plus rapidement que les infrastructures traditionnelles. Le CABR a été officiellement soumis en décembre 2025 au Bureau des grands projets fédéraux en tant que projet d'intérêt national.

SEMAINE DE LA SANTÉ MENTALE

Cette semaine a marqué le lancement de la Semaine de la santé mentale dans le secteur du bâtiment, une initiative annuelle visant à sensibiliser les membres des syndicats du bâtiment du Canada aux services de soutien en matière de santé mentale et de toxicomanie qui leur sont offerts.

Les problèmes de santé mentale peuvent toucher n'importe qui, et cette semaine nous rappelle que de nombreuses personnes traversent des périodes de déprime, en particulier à cette époque de l'année. Si vous vous reconnaissez dans cette description, sachez que vous n'êtes pas seul et qu'il existe des aides à votre disposition.
