John,
Donald Trump said that anything short of Greenland becoming part of the United States is “unacceptable.”
Denmark is now sending reinforcements to Greenland — statements from an American president have real, tangible national security implications.
Some people take Trump's “jokes” lightly or find amusement in his throwaway comments, but I want to be clear that what is truly “unacceptable” here is Trump’s failure to understand the gravity of his words. When a president says something, other countries have to assume he will act on it. They can’t wait to see if he walks it back, loses interest, or moves on to the next idea. They have to prepare for the worst.
We have to realize that when Trump says he’ll do something crazy, he’ll actually do something worse.
I served on the frontlines alongside our allies. Trust in your commander-in-chief is not an abstract concept in foreign policy.
I’m going to keep calling Donald Trump out and pushing for accountability because I have fought too hard for this country for him to make a mockery of America.
If you believe we should stop creating instability with off-the-cuff threats and start acting like a serious partner again, I hope you’ll support this campaign.
