Winter Weather Preparation
The City of Harker Heights is working to prepare for this weekend’s cold weather event. For the most current updates, follow the City of Harker Heights Facebook page.
Warming Center – Our local VFW-Post 3892 will be working with the Police Department and other local organizations to operate a Warming Center at 201 VFW Drive in Harker Heights. Warming Centers are not shelters. They don’t have beds/cots or shower facilities. They provide seating, drinks, snacks and a warm and inviting environment to shelter in for citizens, travelers and homeless.
A few guidelines to help if you need this option: • No drugs, alcohol, weapons or criminal activity • Pets must be kept in a pet crate (bring yours) and may not roam at large • All facility rules and guidelines must be acknowledged and followed
Hours of Operation – The VFW Warming Center will likely open to receive citizens and those who are otherwise in need of warmth Friday evening starting at 7p.m. until such time as it’s reasonable to close the Warming Center. For more information contact the VFW at 254-213-3350
Some City Facilities will be closed over the weekend due to the weather. • Library & Activities Center • Pet Adoption Center • Parks & Recreation and Parks Restroom Facilities (Friday & Saturday) • Recycle & Drop-Off Facility (FM2410)
The Harker Heights Police & Fire Departments are staffing in anticipation of an increase in service-related calls.
The Streets & City Utility crews will be working/available 24/7 over the weekend and are staying in contact with TxDOT to insure quick responses, preparation and problem-solving. If residents have a water or sewer emergency call City Hall at 254-953-5600 and select the appropriate option for the on-call service needed. If there are emergent concerns with a particular street, contact the Police Department non-emergency line at 254-953-5400. If there is an emergency, call 911.
Please turn off your irrigation sprinklers off.
Waste Management will still run as scheduled on Saturday and Monday. If weather impacts collection services on either of those days, missed addresses will be collected during the week. If that happens, we will update our social media sites with that information.
