It’s Theresa from the Southern Poverty Law Center’s federal policy team. I’m personally reaching out because Congress just released a massive funding bill that leaves critical gaps in essential programs and services that keep low-income families afloat while allocating more money for ICE and Border Patrol to continue terrorizing our communities.

But there’s still a chance to pressure lawmakers to do the right thing, and you have the power to demand accountability.

Friend, please urge Congress to reject approving any more money for mass deportation efforts and instead, focus on the real needs of their constituents such as health care coverage, nutritional assistance and affordability.

The proposed funding bill will add hundreds of millions more dollars to ICE’s budget.

This is on top of the $170 billion budgeted for the next four years for detention and enforcement — setting yet another dangerous precedent in our country that will make us less safe by exposing people to violence and instilling fear.

From detaining U.S. citizens who look a certain way and conducting raids, to subjecting detainees to inhumane conditions and even killing a woman in broad daylight, funding mass deportation efforts has left our communities traumatized.

The last thing we need is additional funding to perpetuate these atrocities.

Instead, Congress should focus on the real needs of people who are struggling to get by in a country that is becoming increasingly unaffordable. Supplementing basic needs programs will ensure that Americans get the hand up they need to get back on their feet, feed their families and get the lifesaving health care coverage needed to survive.

My team and I are continuing to push back against cruel policies and advocate for better conditions for low-income Black and Brown communities — demanding accountability and working with lawmakers to ensure a better future is possible for all. But we need your help.

Friend, your voice could make a difference on what our government decides to fund for the rest of the fiscal year — creating a ripple effect on the well-being of our country.

Please tell Congress to oppose any attempts to increase funding for mass deportation efforts, and instead, focus on what Americans really need: better living conditions.
