Governor Gordon Issues Statement Regarding Board of Equalization

“It is clear to me that the mere filing of such a suit at this time will only be more confusing to taxpayers and cause concern and confusion with the county assessor's process.”

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Jan. 22, 2026 – Governor Mark Gordon (R-WY) issued the following statement regarding the Board of Equalization’s contemplated lawsuit regarding the 4% cap on property tax. 

“After consulting with county assessors and legislators with a long history and knowledge of the state and the county assessors schedule, I have directed members of the Board of Equalization to lay it back.  

It is clear to me that the mere filing of such a suit at this time will only be more confusing to taxpayers and cause concern with the county assessor's process.  Assessors already have a complicated enough task with the array of tax exemptions passed each year. 

I and many others remain confident that the 4% cap passed by the legislature and signed by me in 2024 is constitutional.  I believe this is the right decision for the people of Wyoming. 

I continue to urge the Legislature to craft legislation using the recently passed constitutional amendment establishing an additional class for residential property tax that would provide fair, equal, and meaningful property tax relief.”

The Governor also encourages all eligible Wyoming residents in need to apply for all property tax exemptions this year, including the (Homeowners Property Tax Exemption) 25% exemption which is due to the county assessor’s office no later than March 1. 

The Governor wants to remind citizens that Wyoming offers a variety of other tax relief programs including:

• Veterans Property Tax Exemption
• Property Tax Deferral Program
• Property Tax Refund Program
• County Optional Tax Refund Program
• Long Term Homeowners Exemption
