Right now, in Washington D.C., decisions are being made on issues like religious freedom in government, church-state separation, and equal rights for nonreligious Americans.

Christian nationalist policies from Congress are shaping our country’s future and harming our secular government. Too often, nonreligious voices go unheard on Capitol Hill, even though secular Americans are a growing part of the population.

That’s why the Secular Coalition for America’s Lobby Day on March 9 - 10, 2026 ([link removed]) , matters. It’s a time when secular activists can come together to make sure our opinions are heard.

This year, we’re taking on a dangerous bill that would allow preachers to endorse political candidates from the pulpit, undermining the Johnson Amendment and threatening church–state separation as we know it.

Introduced in both the House ([link removed]) and Senate ([link removed]) , the Free Speech Fairness Act targets the Johnson Amendment. The Johnson Amendment became law seven decades ago because Congress decided that nonprofits, including churches and other houses of worship, should focus on educational, social service, and community service activities, not political activities. Allowing churches and other groups to endorse or oppose candidates would further blur the line between religion and government.

As secular Americans, we know that our system of governance functions best when politics are protected from religious interference. We need you to join the fight on March 9th and 10th and show members of Congress that our country's secular government must be upheld.
